FARMINGTON — Main Street and Broadway businesses received a little extra attention Friday afternoon as young artists painted Halloween and Autumn-themed masterpieces on shop windows.
The event was sponsored by the Farmington Downtown Association and Farmington Rotary Club. Cash prizes were awarded to the top four paintings in each of four age groups.
Kendrick Meader, 4, of Vienna painted an entire patch of pumpkins on his assigned window at Franklin Savings Bank.
“I practiced at my grammy’s,” he said as he shuffled through a stack of pencil-sketched pumpkins to find the exact one he wanted to recreate on the window.
Mt. Blue High School Interact members and Mt. Blue JMG students were on hand to sign in artists and assist families who had more than one child taking part in the contest.
Rotary Club members were also on hand, but it was the high school students that led the effort.
“This is all them,” said Interact organizer Pauline Rodrigue. “The kids are doing all of this. We are just standing back in case we are needed.”
On Friday evening, judges viewed the finished pieces and announced the winners based on theme, originality, and neatness of the painting and area. First place winners were awarded $10; second place earned $8; third place received $6; fourth place earned $4.
